Telemedicine and Outreach
The cornerstone of the Diabetic Rural Outreach Project is telemedicine. Advances in technology have allowed the care delivery process to be transformed, expanding the potential reach of the physician to patients in the most remote locations. Through a wide range of network interfaces, our physicians can monitor the vascular status and wound status of their diabetic patients regardless of the location of the patient or the physician.
Technology and Treatment
Technological advances now also allow the delivery of dermal thermometry, arterial and venous Doppler studies, photoplethysmography, and biothesiometric evaluation directly to the patient.
Patient referrals and follow-ups are handled by our medical case managers, and the strength of our network is reinforced by the team approach which keeps all of our providers apprised of a patient's progress. The combination of comprehensive care and advanced medical technology creates the perfect therapeutic environment for both doctor and patient.
Treatment Strategy
The World Health Organization, in its World Diabetes Day report of 2005, said it is possible to reduce amputation rates by at least 50 per cent through just a core strategy that combines prevention, treatment of foot ulcers, close monitoring and education of people with diabetes and health care professionals.9
Building on that philosophy and adding new technological innovation in screening and treatment, we are confident in the success of our mission.
